About Cataract Surgery
SURGERY FOR CATARACTS AND PRESBYOPIA
The surgical procedure for both conditions is essentially the same and offers a permanent solution to the effects of these causes of impaired vision.
In the virtually painless procedure the lens of the eye (opaque due to cataracts or inflexible due to presbyopia) is replaced with an Intraocular Lens and clear vision is restored.
Most people prefer to have this procedure before their vision is significantly impaired, and by choosing one of the advanced Multifocal Intraocular Lenses can enjoy good to excellent vision well into their future, often completely free from the need for glasses.
This is a relatively simple procedure, and in the hands of a skilled surgeon typically. Patients may experience little or no pain and can usually return to their normal activities the following day. More than 3 million cataract surgeries are performed in the United States each year, and cataract surgery is considered one of the safest and most effective of all medical procedures.
The Procedure
The procedure usually takes between 15 and 30 minutes The surgeon makes a small incision at or near the cornea and removes the cloudy or inflexible lens. The new lens (IOL) is then inserted into its permanent position.
The most advanced type of surgical procedure – and the one performed by Dr. O’Day - is called Phacoemulsification.
With this technique the eye heals rapidly, and more than 97% of patients who undergo phacoemulsification, experience no complications at all.
